Hey all,

So for the last few years i have been toying with the idea of building a kit car. Im quite good with my hands and very technically inclined - it all started when I saw that show on discovery called "A Racing Car is Born" where he built an AC Cobra kit car - since then ive falled in love with the idea. Ive done a bit of research and interestingly enough, one of the best AC Cobra kits is actually produced right here in South Africa.

Has anyone ever tried building a kit car? Id love to hear your story and any problems you may have had? Tips ? Cost? Suppliers?

Thanks

THE best. If I recall, their GT40 kit car was actually deemed good enough to do a lap of honour on behalf of Ford at Le Mans a couple of years ago.

I entertain ambitions to do the same in the (relatively) near-future...

Yep...looked into same a while back. Cobra kit here is very good...did calc a while back and would have cost me btw R80 000 to R120 000 in total to build the Cobra depending on engine size etc etc and other additions. No idea what the cost would be of building a kit version of the Cobra now days?

Cobra would be really cool. Even better with a auto-gearbox.
Beach-Buggy?
Amphibious vehicle?

My dad has a Cobra. I will see if he has a copy of the Snakepit magazine in his email tomorrow.

Who's the manufacturer of these kits you are referring to above?

Only thing about kit cars is you need time/patience and a very understanding missus if you have one of those.

I beleive he is talking about Venom Cars.

I've been considering doing a Cobra myself.

That's my hoby, I love restoring/building up cars. I've done quite a few. I'm finishing off my Porshce Speedster at the moment, and since these guys do a replica, I actually bought a few replica accessories from them that I've been struggling to find.
