Anyone knows how long it takes to totally renovate a kitchen? Its a large kitchen.
Also approximate costs?
How do I choose a contractor? Everyone says they are the best but we know better....

Usually 11 to 15 months but could be longer but sadly the costs are never stable and go upwards month after month....
What you NEVER do is pay any money upfront and do your progress payments with a magnifying glass and 2 calculators.

Woah! I thought it just took 2-3 months for a new kitchen...not a whole year++!!! I have seen whole houses being built faster than that!

what? I thougth the renovation take like few week. depend on size. one of my friend had kitchen renovated as tile replaced, cupboard repainted, counter to marble took like 3 weeks. but unofrtunate friend was extreme unhappy due to some tile has chipped or mark damaged by contractor as the contractor has apologise and will have to remove some damage tile and take other 2 weeks to fix it up.

make sure you check tile and kitchen in perfect order before paid.

A kitchen renovation can take anything from 1 week, to 3 or 4 months.. depending on the level of work being undertaken.

If you are merely updating the kitchen and not actually changing the layout it is a relatively quick thing (taking into account most kitchen suppliers work on a 6 week manufacturing window these days). If you are redoing the layout and need to redo electrical and plumbing, then well 4 months if you plan things properly is about the right figure from start of signing the contract to everything being completed.

Costs will vary from R60k up to whatever the hell you want to spend pretty much.

I am totally changing it. Everything out. Layout new. The previous owner had a love for pinewood everywhere where as I like modern classic kitchens with marble and tiles. Its not hideous but my husband said he will treat me with a new kitchen so why not.

Your initial question is the same as the question of "how long is a fishing line?"

It depends if your fishing in a rock pool or in the deep ocean.

The process begins with getting quotations. The contractors will want to come out to inspect and measure the dimensions of your kitchen. You will want to have at least 2/3 quotes. The more the better because they usually dispense some helpful advice while that are mind mapping and planning a quote.

Then it also depends on the contractor. Sometimes they have multiple parallel projects going on and they or the foreman will divide his attention between locations which could slow down your kitchen's progress.

Then 3 to 4 months and probably r150k as a baseline cost

Google kitchen images.
Select one that roughly matches your size and desired finishes.

Doesn't need to be that much.

Large kitchen.....

Working on a recent quote,
to redo plumbing, probably +- R7.5k
to redo electrical, probably +- R5k
to redo tiling, assuming at least a 16sqm kitchen, so 4 x 4... you're looking at easily R4k to redo the floor, probably the same to tile the walls.

I would work on around R10k for the building contractor over and above those costs.

Then to get a decent kitchen with granite tops and no new appliances, I would be starting around the R75k mark.

Ok, so not R150k, but that doesn't include appliances, so could easily get to R150k if they are included.

Haha! Yes if I show him this thread he will probably change his mind!! He was budgeting for R75 000. R150 000 would be a bit painful however they do say the kitchen is the heart of the home....

How big is a big kitchen though?

I'm building a new kitchen at home and it will be roughly 25 Sqm. .. my budget for the kitchen alone is around r120k... appliances are another 30k over and above that. Thst figure doesn't include any of the building electrical or plumbing work.

We ordered our kitchen from the ucandoit crowd at game. It was cheaper than all the custom options, and arrived assembled so it just needed to be bolted to the wall. It was quick!

Of course it would be cheaper...

No offence, but I hope you've budgeted to replace it in 5 years. The quality of their cabinetry is not very good at all....

Those types do not last long and they tend to look horrible after a year of use. Unless you barely use the kitchen.... With a kitchen its best to get top quality stuff that lasts even though it is painful to pay so much. Hope it is not the case for you but at least you have been warned about the quality.
