Hi All,

I'm looking for a device to run Kodi on... my friend has recommended as Raspberry Pi 3.

Anyone know what other components I will need?

Power source? SD card etc?

Power source, SD Card and an HDMI cable.

A wireless keyboard of some description wouldn't hurt either.

But you can do the setup with a wired keyboard and then use an app on your phone for controlling the device thereafter.

I'm using Pi3s all over with Kodi - they work well. Just need the above.

If you're buying something rather get a Android Box which is plug and play, supports 4K, HDR and 10-bit HEVC.

Xiaomi Mi Box.

I have the previous iteration of the Pi and that works reasonably well with streaming also (source dependent).

What underlying OS are you running your Pi's with? Have you tried a few? Which is your favourite?

I have two running currently - one runs OpenElec, and the second i recently reloaded with LibreElec. They are very similar apparently, but I much prefer LibreElec. The interface feels cleaner - its much easier to find more advanced options. It also seems to load things a bit faster.

Make sure when you buy a SD Card to buy the fastest you can find, I also recently read that if you buy them bigger than the minimum, they last a little longer (not sure how true that is, but the price difference between 16gb and 32gb is very small anyway).

Thanks, I have been running OpenElec, I shall give LibreElec a whirl.

Was on OpenElec for many moons - but the lack of updates had me move to LibreElec... recently moved to OSMC when I replaced my old Pi's with Pi3's... happy with it over the past couple of months.

OSMC. Can overclock my Pi with it and the default skin is beautiful. Estuary is too messy for me.

Everything you need : https://www.pishop.co.za/store/custom-kits/raspberry-pi-3-kit-boxed

Just add a Keyboard/Mouse. I bough one of those mini Keyboards from Takealot.

Also buy this, its well worth it (USB with power switch) :

Have you taken a look at the odroid c2 ? gigabit ethernet , 4k support and more. In my opinion its better than the raspberry.

Something I noticed about the Odroid C2 is that our local supplier lists the device as 2Ghz processor but Hardkernel say it is 1.5Ghz just if that matters to anyone.

Moved to OSMC
Openelec too much of a mission to install on usb drive
Pi's don't like power failures. Proper shut down or sd card will corrupt
