A campaign to initiate the capture & arrest of Joseph Kony, a wanted war criminal in Uganda who's army is responsible for the murder, rape & mutilation of Ugandan citizens for no reason other than to maintain his power.

By "making him famous" the goal is that, in the same way that social media led to the uprisings in Egypt last year, the pressure from the general public will keep him on the forefront of the social agenda.

Except he hasn't been in Uganda for years.

That said he is a nasty piece of work.
Joseph Kony (born c. 1961)[1] is a Ugandan guerrilla group leader, head of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), a group engaged in a violent campaign to establish theocratic government based on the Ten Commandments throughout Uganda.[2] The LRA is a militant group with a syncretic Christian extreme religious ideology. They are known for the extreme atrocities they commit against civilians, including murder, mutilations, rape, and in some accounts even cannibalism.[6]

The 10 commandments must have changed - I don't recall them saying eat your neighbour.

The organisation does understand that Kony has moved to Sudan and the DRC but neither government has the manpower to effectively combat the LRA. That is why the Ugandan military requires U.S. instructors to help them in this campaign. Yes, the Ugandan military is also responsible for heinous acts of abuse and rape, but the campaign in no ways benefits the military or the government financially. The money goes to outreach programmes that set up schools, radio towers and the brilliant early warning system that has helped many children escape the LRA abductors. On a last note, they do not require you to give money, as that is not what the whole Kony 2012 drive is about. It's simply there to make him a household name in the same way that Hollywood actors are. The more people that recognise the threat that Joseph Kony represents, the more countries policies can change to help capture him and end the horrific reign of the LRA on central Africa.

I swear one thing about this campaign... and how effective it is... is that I have seen it everywhere over the last couple of days. Now even on MyBB. My wife was chatting to me about this last night. Good way to get exposure on an important issue:

These arguments are fair enough. I'm not gonna give these guys any money. At the same time, it's a well made, enjoyable video and it does raise some good points.
A lot of people can quite justly be accused of being sheep and following the herd here, but I reckon, just as fairly, a whole bunch of people can be accused of being contrarian just because it's cool to be contrarian.
I'm enjoying watching this from a purely social media/tech perspective, and look forward to seeing how it develops over the coming months.

Tell you one thing. This has brought great exposure to an important issue. These guys are out there, doing stuff. Kudos to them.

More critical articles.... read the one from the other AID workers in Uganda...

And then there is this interview with the photographer who took pics of the Invisible Children guys with the guns of the SLA...

The problem is... with Kony and the LRA already fragmented and on their last legs... a bit of exposure could have the opposite effect and give him much needed help and bring other rebels to his cause.
