So my GF went to South Korea for holiday, the source of Hyundai, Kia and Daewoo. So let me say 1 thing. They are way ahead of us in terms of infrastructure (roads, buildings, public transport, etc.). Their food sucks tho (no seriously, I ate some snacks nearly barfed, BLEGH rice cakes GO TO HELL).
They have as many, if not more cars than SA. While we drive around in Putco buses she drove around in Hyundai Air conditioned buses with LCD TVs for every seat (yes it was public transport and tickets in town were ~R15). People there are obsessed with TV so all buses are fitted with TV and cars also. They love gadgets, hence Hyundai cars being so well fitted.
She didn't see any i10s. Mostly i30s and higher models. Some i20s (which seem to be budget models there). Pretty much everyone drives Hyundai and Kia.
When you see the photos it makes me realize SA will never be able to catch up again, especially not with the likes of the ANC
and our constant striking (those people work incredibly hard).
Any person who tells me those companies are far behind need to go to that country to see what those people have accomplished and realize they have already caught up to Europe, cars is just another thing they'll soon surpass them with.
Houses all have air conditioning and electrically heated floors. They love light so everything is lit up the wazoo. Cars are everywhere and the photos I saw multilane roads (larger lanes than ours, perfect condition, perfectly painted) are chock and block with Hyundai, Kia and some Daewoo. They have some Mercedes and BMW. Other brands are almost non-existent there apparantly.
From what she says tho, traffic is terrible, took her 6 hours @ 11pm to get to the airport. People work to ungodly hours in the night (school ends 9pm), so traffic is especially bad late at night.
They definitely aren't making some "experimental" car to sell to the west. They are perfecting them there and selling them everywhere else because they can.
My 2c on the whole Koreans are far behind and make crap motto many forum members have.
