Kruger Park holiday - advice

Hi, want to take my family to the Kruger Park sometime in July during school holidays. Looking for relaxed few days, hotel/lodge style to just chill...and some proper game viewing with my kids.

The Protea Hotel Kruger Gate looks decent, good reviews on Tripadvisor. Rates around R2,000 per room/night.

Any other places/suggestions I should consider? Thanks!

Ngwenya lodge very close to the crocodile gate.

You could get a rondavel or bungalow at Pretoriuskop, Lower Sabie or even Satara.
Depending on how many people you are, how many nights you plan on staying, it could be cheaper than the hotel.

Bit of a prostitution problem has reared its head on the main road into the Park.
My mate took this photo a couple of weeks ago.

Hi guys

Couple more questions -

1) We're staying over at Paul Kruger Gate (the Protea hotel)- thinking of perhaps splitting Jhb trip into 2 and overnight somewhere (worried about time, landing 13:00, want to avoid driving after sunset) Any place you would recommend as must see area/town?

2) Safest route there - N4 to Nelspruit, then White River/Hazyview road, then one of the gates i.e. Phabeni or Numbi?

Thanks!

Find accommodation in Waterval Boven? Was scenic and interesting enough from when I was there ages ago.

2h 22 min from airport.

And just before the twisty downhill part of the N4.

Book day trip entrances in advance as the quotas fill up very quickly during school hols.
Phone Wednesday am to PTA H/O.

Cool, nice tip txs, will book asap.

I'd avoid Numbi, not safe. Dullstroom, Sabie, Hazyview would be the way I'd go.

Whatever you do, Don't open your windows!

Thank you. Per attached map, the red route would be your preference then? Per a Kruger Park advisory the R538 is to be avoided (and Numbi, as you said).

Yip. Red route between Lydenburg and Sabie is Long Tom Pass, which is worth a look.

On the blue route, a pleasant enough stopover is at the Sudwala Caves, east of Waterval Boven. If you do take the blue route, stick with the R40 from White River to Hazyview.

Not sure how easier it will be to get accommodation in the school holidays, though.

Unfortunately the roads around Lydenburg (Mashising) is in a shocking condition and I wouldn't consider going that route unless you're driving a serious off-road machine, N4 to Nelspruit is much safer and if you go through Schoemanskloof the route is every bit as scenic.

"serious off-road machine"? Stick to the speed limits and you will have no problems.

And yes, I was there in the last six months...

Just heard they might be full already......try online now. Remember you only lose your money if you arrive after 1pm. Hardly likely. Other alternate is waiting at the gates from 2-5 am
