OpenSuse9-11/Ubuntu8.04 - Setting up Vodacom 3g connection = >2weeks.
Kubuntu8.10 - Setting up a first time, connected Vodacom 3g connection = <10sec
Look on my face = priceless
 
I agree with you. Downloaded Ubuntu 8.10 on friday, installed it this weekend. Plugged in my E220 modem and it picked it up straight away. Just had to select South Africa and Vodacom from the list of countries and SP's and it connected flawlessly. I tried Ubuntu once before and was very dissapointed...my modem did not want to work and getting the partition off my hard drive was a "groot gemors". I have to applaud Ubuntu and Conical for getting it right this time. I would now recommend Ubutuntu for anyone. I have never used Linux in my life and got used to it in one day and loving it! Only reason i will be using Windows still is for my Nero. I know that Ubuntu is supposed to be for free, but think if Conical were package Ubuntu 8.10 and sell it for a minimal price and included support with the retail package they would really give Windows a run for their money and get more people to switch over and then maybe more 3rd parties will start developing software for Linux???????????????????? Just a thought.
 
The joys of locally tested software and hardware support ;)

I'll definitely be giving 8.10 from 8.04 a try in the coming weeks.
 
Well that sounds like good news and I have a spare partition which I am going to use to test out Ubuntu again, my first look at it was a year ago and like you I could not get anything to work, would love to see how far it has come in a year.
 
thank you fskmh. I did download Nero Linux and gave it a quick over, but did not look as nice as the windows version and i could not see a option to compress dvd's into a smaller size as you can with Nero. Already uninstalled it as i just saw it as a waste of space and you can only trial it for 15 days or something anyway...did not even look like a program i want to spend time on to learn and explore. Threegee...i think you will be pleasantly surprised with Ubuntu 8.10...i certainly was...I am using Skype on my Ubuntu...my E220 modem was connected in like 5 seconds flat and a driver was auomatically installed for my wi fi card.....i was astonished. I downloaded Ubuntu mostly because i was bored and just wanted to play with it a bit and see what the new version was about...now i have been converted i think....and Ubuntu has earned it self a space on my hard drive. (wow that came out sounding corny)

Anyway, give it a try and see what you think.
 
mmm I guess i am just familiar with it....and the feature where you can take a normal DVD and shrink it down to fit onto a blank 4.7GB disc is very nice. To do that i will just have to log back into Windows...not a train smash....everyting else i am now doing on Ubuntu....

I gave 3.5.0.1 a try a while back and found k3b more reliable.

I find that k3b and some of the other Linux alternatives are indeed better than Nero.

I was really impressed at the speed at which I was able to set up my 3G connection. I don't even have a 3G card or what not- I plugged in my Nokia via the mini-usb and Ubuntu found it, then I went to network connections and set up a 3G connection and clicked on Connect..... this took me less than 30 seconds from start to finish. Second time round, I plugged it in and clicked connect. Under 10 seconds.

This was one of Mark Shuttleworth's main objectives in Intrepid- 3G connections.... and in the process he even owned M$'s "ease of connecting 3G".... :D
