Kubuntu: package manager

Something has broken on my adept package manager and whatever it is is also affecting synaptic.

For instance, looking for firefox in "adept installer" gives many hits including the firefox package.
looking for firefox in "adept manager" and synaptic only gives latex-xft-fonts

It seems to be some kind of config problem, but I can't find anything useful. Any ideas as to where I can look to fix it as I really don't like adept.

kubuntu 8.10, reasonably vanilla setup, upgraded from a clean install of 8.04

see if there are any error messages when you run sudo apt-get update

Tried that several times yesterday, with no errors and no change in the behaviour of synaptic or adept. However, did it again now, also with no errors, and now synaptic is working properly (just installed krusader to test).

Thanks for your input.

Will I break apt if I uninstall adept?

It shouldn't as Adept is just a GUI front end for Apt.
