Sorted ... weird one ... have only seen it once before a looong time ago.
My router would just not get authenticated, even after multiple resets of it & the modem ... almost like its MAC was 'banned'. Solution, plug laptop into Ethernet of modem and login via Win Vista's PPPoE adapter, logout and reconnect router ... presto, logins in immediately.
Maybe help someone else in the future.
