Durban – A police officer was shot and killed while responding to a robbery in the Bluff, south of Durban, on Tuesday night, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said Brighton Beach police officers were patrolling in the Bluff area around 21:00 when they were alerted to a robbery in progress at a nearby garage.

As the police approached the garage, the suspects ran out and the officers gave chase.

During the chase, a police officer, Constable Thomas Kwela, 37, was shot and killed.

One suspect was arrested and was expected to be charged with robbery and murder.

The police are still looking for the other suspects who fled the scene with stolen cigarettes and cash.

KwaZulu-Natal acting commissioner Major General Bheki Langa conveyed his condolences to Kwela's family, friends and colleagues.

"We condemn this brutal killing of a young police officer who died while protecting the lives of our citizens. Those who kill our police officers are the worst of the worst.

"They made the biggest mistake of their lives by attacking members of the law enforcement fraternity. We will spare no resource to ensure that the outstanding suspects are traced and brought to book. It will be in their best interests to hand themselves over before our police officers pounce on them," said Langa.

Or why not rather apprehend them, give them 15 to 25 years in prison and then release them after 10 years to clear prison space?
 
Cop's killing a double blow to family

Durban – The family of the Brighton Beach police officer who was shot dead during a robbery at a service station in Durban on Monday had buried his elder brother just two days before.

The killing of 37-year-old Qhamuka Thomas Khwela, a constable at the Brighton Beach police station, was a double blow to the family, his brother, Philangezwi Khwela, said on ay.

“He had taken a few days of family responsibility leave last week to assist with the funeral arrangements.

“We buried our beloved older brother, Sekhona, on Saturday. He had been ill. On Sunday, we spent the day at home with the whole family and rested as Qhamuka was going to return to work the next day,” he said.

The constable left home in Mariannhill, where he lived with his mother and five siblings, in the afternoon to work the night shift.

“I saw him before he left home. He wore his full uniform and he looked very neat as usual. We expected him to return home from duty in the morning. But later that night, we received a call informing us that he had been shot during a robbery. We were shattered. Our mother is traumatised. She is heartbroken about losing two sons days apart,” he said.

“We are more shattered with the latest death in the family and feel that we have been robbed of his life.

“We are hoping that his killers will be arrested soon,” said Philangezwi.

According to police, Khwela and his partner were patrolling the Bluff on Monday night when they responded to a robbery in progress at a Shell Garage on Solomon Mahlangu (Edwin Swales) Drive.

Alleged cop killer pleads for his life

Durban - The man accused of killing Brighton Beach policeman Constable Thomas Khwela was remanded at Westville Prison.

Xolani Zungu, 30, of Mariannhill, told the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday that he did not want to be kept in custody at the police holding cells because he feared for his life.

He appeared in court on two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances and one count of murder.

Police are still on the hunt for the remainder of the gang that held up a petrol garage on Solomon Mahlangu (Edwin Swales) Drive on Tuesday.

Police said Khwela, 37, and his partner had responded to a business robbery last week and were ambushed by three robbers. One of them shot Khwela while fleeing. Zungu was arrested nearby.

He was found in possession of a Z88 pistol with 15 rounds of ammunition.

In the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday, the bare-footed Zungu walked into the dock grimacing in pain. His Legal Aid attorney told the court that Zungu had been assaulted by police.

Magistrate Mohamed Motala asked him to show the court his injuries. Zungu limped out and showed the court an open cut on his foot.

I never said they deserve to die on duty, especially that officer was fighting crime.

you have to respect every person has made his / her contribution for good.
...and also you have to understand how to determine what is good / evil. :)
