A farmer was shot dead in Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.

Willem Weites, 78, was shot on his farm on Monday morning, said Captain Thulani Zwane.

"He was at his farm fixing a water pump machine when three unknown men jumped out of their vehicle and drew a firearm. They demanded money from the deceased, shot him twice in the head and chest," said Zwane.

The men were alleged to have entered Weites' house, and taken an undisclosed amount of money from his safe.

No arrests had been made yet.

But what some do say is that we should ignore the elephant in the room because we are all affected by crime. Besides, they kill their own at such an alarming rate that nobody else should feel special in complaining about it. While I'd agree that it seems futile to point fingers at entire race groups over something like this, I can't help but feel that yet an another double standard is exposed here. It's apparently ok to demonise an entire race group as having been oppressors in this country (something that continues to this day) when in fact it was mostly limited to the government of the time, but it's not okay at all to do the same now, where brutal, unnecessary crime is concerned. I'm not saying it is ok - I don't have the answers. I just think it's all a bit rich.

Our current government is totally out of their depth in being willing or able to deal with this and it's a ticking time bomb any which way you look at it.

Pietermaritzburg - The killers of popular KwaZulu-Natal farmer Willem Weites have been sentenced to life in prison.

Mzomuhle Ntshangase, 30, and Moses Sigawuge, 34, were jailed for life plus 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances by Pietermaritzburg High Court Judge Thoba Poyo-Dlwati.

A third accused, Big-Boy Ncube, 29, who was not part of the murder plot, but who drove the killers to the Weites’ Ngome farm, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder and 15 years for robbery.

The three men pleaded guilty to attacking Weites, 78, his daughter, Everlien, and their workers at their farm near Vryheid on the morning of October 21 last year.
