Two hijackers were shot dead while trying to escape in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday.

Colonel Jay Naicker said the men had hijacked a BMW in Springfield Park and shot at the police during their getaway.

"The suspects eventually lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the wall of a house on Sikhindi Road in KwaMashu," Naicker said.

"Although the vehicle burst into flames on impact, the suspects immediately got out of the vehicle and continued shooting at police."

The police returned fire, killing one of the men. His accomplice ran away, but was later seen in Malendela Drive.

"Members of the flying squad approached the suspect and he opened fire on them, they also returned fire. While the suspect was shot and wounded in the gunfight he continued to flee until he collapsed and passed away on Malendela Drive," Naicker said.

The police had opened a case of hijacking and attempted murder, and an inquest docket.

Independent Police Investigative Directorate officials were on the scene and had started their own investigation, said Naicker.

Time the [especially armed ones] criminals received the memo that their time on earth is limited if they don't cease and desist.
