Any recommendations for hotels/guesthouses?

No more than R1k per room per night and close to/on the beach.

I've always enjoyed the Cabana hotel.... it's about a 5 min drive to the Gateway with a great view of the beach/sea (close too :) )
The other one I looked at was the Umhlanga Sands. It has resturants and an arcade.... Both have pools/tennis courts and I know Cabana has a Spa section as well as a gym.

Edit: hehe, sorry, if I recall correctly it was between R800 - R1000 per night....
 
Cabana is decent enough as a hotel, and its close to most of the decent stuff in Umhlanga, and you of course can't get closer to the beach....
 
I received an email for a opening special offer at Zimbali .... that was awesome offer for a 5* place....

deleted it ... maybe google ...
 
How far up the North Coast, blu? In March we rented a phenomenal house on the beach in Zinkwazi that was like R1800 per night for a 4 bedroom house.

You will not believe it, but this it what I originally wanted.

I got the same email on Thu and when I called this morning they said that there is nothing available for this coming long weekend :(

I suspect the long weekends in Aug and Sept are excluded, but it really is a magnificent deal.

Are there any similar type resorts in that area?

Hmmm, for the money you're looking at spending it could be difficult to get something, but there are alot of similar developments in that area.
 
I did some checking around... Flights are full as you say, and all the decent resorts/hotels are also full this long weekend.
