TWO traffic officers were injured this morning, one seriously, when a minibus taxi ploughed into them at an Alton robots roadblock.

The driver of the white Quantum was reportedly travelling at a high speed and was unable to stop when traffic officials tried to wave him down.

ICE Medical Rescue and city officials rushed to the scene as paramedics treated one of the men for minor head injuries.

The other was rushed to Netcare The Bay Hospital with severe injuries, including a number of broken bones.

Present at the scene of the incident was the city’s Head of Public Safety and Security, Zolile Poswa.

‘One of the passengers in the taxi alleged that the driver’s visibility was impaired due to the taxi’s misted windscreens,’ said Poswa.

‘She claimed she warned him of this risk and also advised him to slow down but he got angry with her and continued to drive recklessly.’

Aside from shock, no serious injuries were reported from passengers in the taxi.

‘We had also discovered that the driver of the vehicle did not have an official driver’s license.

‘Police officers arrested him for reckless driving and he was taken into custody,’ Poswa said.

When will the road carnage end?

When the following happens:

a) All the hoenderhokke i.e. taxis, ancient vehicles that are held together with blou-draad, etc, are permanently removed off the roads
b) People's attitudes are sufficiently adjusted
c) Visible policing i.e. NOT HIDING IN BUSHES WITH A SPEED TRAP CAMERA or SOLICITING BRIBES in a roadblock.

You know there is always this thing about kzn road accidents over holiday season, what I would like to see is a breakdown of the car registrations involved in these accidents. How many of those accidents involve out of province vehicles?
