Depends what she needs it for?

Plasma will be better for SD content (DSTV/DVDs) which I'd assume she'd be watching mostly... It is reflective though.

If the room has a lot of sunlight then the LCD will probably be the better option.

Well I have the PS43D450 and I swear by it. It is a fantastic tv and I recommended it to her. However, I'm not exactly sure what would be best for her. A full hd LCD with no reflection or the plasma. She currently doesn't have dstv so she will mostly be watching movies from a media player, but she will eventually get dstv.

I'm still leaning towards the plasma, just wanted to get opinions on the LA40D550.

I got the LA40D550. I use it as a PC Monitor + PS3. For me the quality is absolutely fantastic, i watch SD and HD stuff from my PC - granted SD isnt the most amazing but HD is brilliant. Gaming is flawless. USB Features are a plus. I dont have DSTV so i cant comment on that, but for my home its awesome.

I've got an LA32D550 and I've seen the LA40D550 in action. The D550's really brought Plasma matching LCD tech to the masses, because of the excellent pricing. Personally I would go for the LCD (a couple of months ago, I would have said plasma).

IMO 5 Series LCD has never matched 4 Series plasma in terms of picture quality and SD handling. But the new pricing is indeed excellent for those that favour resolution over picture quality.

Reflections irritate the craap out of me, I vote LCD!

Proud owner of LA32D550, wish I splurged for the 40"! :D

This is the kind of mother that won't care about resolution but will care about picture quality.

Surely resolution is a factor which influences "picture quality" ? :D Not the only factor, but definitely one of the factors...

I have the LA40D550, which weirdly doesn't accept a 1080p input from my PS3 (via HDMI). Has anybody else had that issue? Apart from that little nag, it is an awesome TV - features are great and everything.

Sounds very strange... I don't have a PS3 but have thrown 1080p at the TV from my Xbox360, my PC and various notebooks (all via HDMI) and never had a problem. That's on a LA46D550

Something must be wrong... do you have any other 1080p HDMI sources to test?

Works perfectly well on my one, at 1080/24 and 1080/60

If you are picking LCD over plasma because of screen reflections, bear in mind that not all LCD panels have an anti reflective surface. The 40D550 is one of these. Still a fantastic TV for the price.

If you want to check for an AR coating take a laser pointer to the shop and shine it over the panels. The difference between them is really obvious and it also entertains the sales staff.

Hahaha, that's funny! :D

U know if the 32D550 has? Cos it seems pretty anti-reflective to me, at least.. and I'm preeetty finicky.

Don't know if the 32D550 has an anti-reflective coating, although Samsung's slogan is "Reflects your style". I'm sure that someone here has one and can tell us.

Oh I have it, just sayin, reflections aren't a problem, so it's weird that the 40" version is as reflective as you say.
