Major nuclear fusion breakthrough

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) at the US Department of Energy's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has recorded the biggest temperature and energy increase ever with a magnetised fusion experiment.

The NIF recently published its finding in the Physical Review journal, revealing its unique experimental setup increased the temperature of a so-called "hotspot" by 40%. It produced over three times the amount of energy of previous experiments.

Yet net gain in fusion, as the old joke goes, is always 10 to 20 years away, no matter what year it is. :-/

Good to see that someone is making progress on the fusion side. The big hope for the field has been the ITER reactor, which will be the world's largest once construction is complete. Yes this time we are really 10-20 years away we just need to invest in this new breakthrough. /s

But there has been some good progress in the last 20 years. I think its within our reach for the next generations lifetime.
