Is the Best Lamborghini Behind Us? — The Carmudgeon Show w/ Jason Cammisa & Derek Tam-Scott Ep. 248​

This week: Jason recaps the latest Hagerty ICONS video - discussing Temerario, the new baby Lamborghini, and its siblings from different eras of baby Lambo family tree. Needless to say, it’s quite a performer - the likes of which have never been approached by any other non-speciality Lamborghini ever. But is that alone enough to make it an icon?

Maybe not. But why?

The latest ICONS video goes over three distinct chapters in the history of the Baby Lamborghini, each defined by the engine - the first of which is the cross-plane crank V8 era led by the Urraco, Silhouette, and Jalpa.

We learn - these cars are pleasantly surprising to drive near their limits, and while they were all a lot slower than the V12 Countach that joined the lineup in the late 70s/early 80s, they exhibited playful driving characteristics, exotic interiors, great sounds, and other pleasant surprises you might not expect.

But despite their charm, they didn’t do well for the brand - and Lamborghini struggled to move them. And so, baby Lambos went on hiatus for a while.

But after Audi obtained Lamborghini, they returned - in the form of the Gallardo and Huracán. And quite the opposite happened - a brand once struggling, came back to life filled with 10 cylinder song, and stuck around for well over 15 years.

But what about the newest era - the Temerario, and its hybrid flat-plane crank V8? Will it continue to impress like its 10 cylinder siblings did? Or is it too complicated and too focused on speed to bring the same life back to the brand?

Lamborghini Temerario Polizia joins Italian police force

Automobili Lamborghini has presented a new Temerario to the Italian State Police at a ceremony held at the automaker’s Sant’ Agata Bolognese headquarters.

Lamborghini has presented a new Temerario to the Italian State Police at a ceremony with Prefect Renato Cortese, Central Director of the traffic, railway and special units police, representing the Chief of Police, and Director General of Public Security Prefect Vittorio Pisani. The supercar, which joins the Lamborghinis already in service, will be used for vital services, such as emergency transport of organs and medical supplies. For more than 20 years, six vehicles have entered the fleet, assisting in over two hundred organ transport missions across Italy.

Lamborghini and the Polizia di Stato began this collaboration in 2004 with a first-generation Gallardo in September of that year. Later on, the Gallardo LP560-4 and a Huracán Polizia joined the fleet, and were deployed on the country’s main motorways. An Urus Performante has also been in service since 2023.

Lamborghini Hints At Wild New Temerario Variants Including Sterrato Successor

The Lamborghini Temerario may only be at the beginning of its life, but the Italian manufacturer is already hinting that its new V8 hybrid supercar could eventually become a much broader family.

Much like the Huracan before it, the Temerario’s new platform has been engineered with several different versions in mind. That could mean everything from a lighter rear-wheel-drive model to a hardcore track machine and, potentially, another raised off-road special inspired by the Huracan Sterrato.

Lamborghini Has Plenty Planned For The Temerario

The Huracan proved just how far Lamborghini could stretch a single model. Over its lengthy production run, the V10 supercar appeared in numerous forms, including rear and all-wheel-drive versions, Spyder models, the Performante, Tecnica, STO and the wonderfully unconventional Sterrato.

Lamborghini product line director Paolo Racchetti has now suggested the Temerario could follow a similar path.

Importantly, its electrified platform gives Lamborghini more freedom than it had with the Huracan. Engineers can alter not only the combustion engine but also the electric side of the powertrain, opening the door to substantially different interpretations of the car.

According to Racchetti, the architecture was developed from the outset to accommodate several different missions rather than simply underpinning one coupe and its convertible sibling.
