So I had a thread on laminate flooring but I dunno I can't seem to find it. Might be the shiraz preventing me from finding it.

Anyway, I had my entire house done about 11 months ago using a product called KronoLoc, spent a small fortune and figured they would last.

Well I was wrong. These are the ****test floors ever, and not cheap I might add, about R130 p/sm if I recall. The biggest issue we have is you get even the slightest drop of water on them and they bubble. Seriously a drop.

I had laminate floors throughout my old house and not once did we have a problem. We obviously never clean them with water and if anything spills on them you clean it straight away.

But I am not kidding, we had people around for dinner and the one persons whiskey glass had condensation on it and it dripped on the floor, I cleaned it up probably within 60 seconds and now the floor is ****ed.

I have even had the MD of the flooring company out to see how **** these floors are and he just says "I don't know what to say".

I urge whoever wants to put laminate flooring to stay away from KronoLoc. The biggest load of horse **** out there!

Thanks for the warning.

I'm about tos tart the process of putting down laminate in my house, and I am gonna do the majority of the house (barring the kitchen)

Laminate flooring has never been an option for me. My sis has laminate floors throughout the house, except the kitchen.

I would rather use plywood as a cheaper alternative.

I wanted to put in laminating flooring in the flat I rent (our rent is cheap so we do our own upgrades) but found out that quality flooring is R400 p/sm.

Needless to say the carpets are being ripped out soon and the 65 year old parquet flooring under them is getting refurbished.

I agree that Kronoloc's laminated flooring is the worst. I had this installed in our previous house. The floors did not resemble the colour of the sample that was shown to me (one half of each plank was dark, giving a striped effect, I had photos to prove this did not correspond to the sample), but after I complained they told me that this colour difference was normal. As we sold the house soon after, I did not take the fight further.

Ok so its not just me. They are seriously the worst floors I have ever had / seen. We even have some sections where the boards are actually cracking. Ridiculous.

Dude, I drove past melrose arch and I see someone advertising Bamboo flooring for R485/sqm incl. labour. I hear bamboo is good, so I don't know.

@Grim, I shall stay away from kronoloc.

Just ordered vinyl flooring for our lounge, passage and kitchen. It's as thick as vinyl planks and is laid in the same way. Totally waterproof which is great for my water obsessed toddler. Was 20% more than quality laminate but long time I think it's the right decision! Will let you know how it turns out after they fit in May.

Oh and bonus: it gets laid on top of my existing tiles - no need to chop and cover the house in dust!! It's the Belgotex novaclick range (if memory serves).

I never liked laminate flooring and I remember howling in laughter when the salesmen told me their prices. Honestly never have seen anything so ridiculously overpriced for an artificial flooring material in all my born days. It's freaking plastic that's supposed to look like wood and it just doesn't work. It's got that squishy feel when you walk over it. I don't care if it comes from Sweden or Soweto it's shiit and it makes a beautiful house look shiit and it makes the owners look like morons. Nothing beats natural materials, nothing.

Yet you still see old houses with wood boards or parquet flooring that's a 100yrs+ old and better than any of this new age crap. Makes you think, doesn't it? :D

+1

The carpets in my bedrooms will be lifted soon. My first choice would be oak or yellow wood but it costs a fortune. I like the bamboo flooring idea.

Laminate flooring has come a long way. It's half the price or less than real wood and some of them look indistinguishable. Plus you get the benefits of being incredibly durable, and some are even water safe.
