Hello,

I am looking for something to use in school where everyone in the classroom is able to speak to each other. I'm looking for something simple which allows private messaging and a main channel with no other fancy stuff. If possible open source or freeware. I've tried numerous amounts but none of them really are perfect

Thanks

start>run>winchat ;) test it now :D

Edit: maybe not, it used to work on windows98 when I was still @ school, seems it's voiced based on xp? ;)

I'm looking for something that is able to list all the users online, makes things easier

Look at most..

Fomine: 203mb? Uhm no thanks
Lama: Crappy, unresponsive, doesn't list users
BORGchat: Ok, but it's a bit more then what I need
QWER-Chat
QuickMessenger: Uses NetSend, this is disabled at my school so I can't use it
RealPopUp: Doesn't list users
NetSend 4: Uses NetSend, nope..
Windows Communicator: Complicated

Still need to try out the others

Yeah it looks perfect, although I can't try it out now. Would be nicer if it had private conversations too.

*riiinng

Jusus that program was k4k stupid. Did we even get it to work once? It should be simple, its not even over the internet, but windows cant even get it right.

I think what you lookinng for is A Chat, You can either use a public channel or send private messages to users that are online. This software only wotks on the LAN, I don't think it can connect to networks outside the LAN. It also Opensource and FREE !!!

http://achat.sourceforge.net/

if you're not having any joy with other products, install a DC hub. A hub's focus is P2P downloading, but just don't use that (with some very simple scripting you can disable file sharing - maxmimum share size allowed = 1 byte :D ) Private and public chats are supported and a list of users is provided.

use it ... don't use it

my school uses a program called Netschool support, allows chatting and remote control and all sorts of stuff, it was meant for the teacher to use but we're a little smarter than that..hehe :)

I'd probably use mIRC and an IRC server. There are a few free ones available.

Try Beware IRCD or IRCXPro for some Servers.

Otherwise LanChat is pretty decent, but very simple.

For a paid program, Network Assistant is VERY nice and easy to use, and includes functions like a shared whiteboard, public and private chats, etc. Give it a look, it's my #1 recommendation.

First tried Fomine Lan Chat and when 5 or more people join things start slowing down. Moved to AChat and it's working great!
