Hi all.

How do setup gaming for LAN parties as far as licensing of games go. I am based in gordons Bay and will be hosting LAN parties shortly.

easiest, i assume, would be players bring their own PC/laptops and purchase the games from us?

If u holding lan parties then yeah to bring your own pc will be great, but since many gamers already have the games legal or illegal u will be hard pressed to let them buy the games from u. But if they want to go legal and play online then yeah great but for lan not u don't need legal games. Having a few extra pc's not a bad Idea since there is always someone who has a friend that don't have a pc or his pc is broke and want to join in the lan party.

Great stuff. Thanks for the feedback. Just new at this and want to offer a legit venue for the LAN parties. especially with Season hitting us in Gordons bay. Any other info regarding setting up and running LAN venue would be much appreciated.

ya, get a partner so you can make shifts staying awake - good luck

If you want to encourage copying of stuff (A big reason why some people go), you also want to make sure you have the fastest switches you can afford. Gigabit if possible basically.

Also make sure you don't stress out single breakers on your distribution board too much. This is especially true with all the new parts coming out that need 347234 power connectors. Also make sure your extension cables are up to scratch if you plan to run more than 2-3 pcs off 1

You don't necessarily need the fastest switches, just a very good backbone. If you don't have good backbone the rest of the network will keep falling over. As for games and keeping it legal, good luck on that front. Copying will happen even if you don't want it to, so tell them not to do it but understand that they will.

Also a few fans is not a bad idea. And give each person an IP address to use so there will be no nonsense about IP addresses. And a no speakers policy is a very good idea headphones only.

LAN gamers won't purchase games at the LAN.

Ideally you'd want 2 networks, one for copying and one for gaming. But that can get expensive.

Definitely use gigabit switches. They aren't that expensive anymore and make a huge difference.
