LAN Internet Connection

Hi all
I am aware of the wireless LAN router one can buy for an HSDPA data card, but because of cost I would like to see if I can get by with my current LAN router first, before having to buy a new one at R2k.
I have my HSDPA card in one one laptop (Windows XP), connected to the internet. This laptop is connected to a network router. I have another laptop (Windows Vista) connected to the same network router. Is there a way that I can set up my router (Netgear) and the other laptop so that it can also connect to the internet via laptop 1's internet connection?

There was a rather detailed discussion about this a few weeks back, I just can't remember the post title. Anyone else recall perhaps?

Set up Internet Connection Sharing on the laptop with the HSDPA card.

In this configuration, the first laptop acts as a router and the other router is not necessary, you'll only need a hub or a switch. If you don't have a hub or a switch and have to use your existing router, you'll need to disable DHCP on it otherwise it will fight with the laptop sharing the internet connection, also check the router's IP address, it will need to be 192.168.0.x, but cannot be 192.168.0.1.

I have a similar config. My router is the DHCP server, the HSDPA modem is on my pc which is the ICS host. Wife's pc is ICS client & gets ip from the router, wireless, and I had to set her default gateway to be the ip of my pc, as well as set the DNS and WINS servers on her pc's tcpip to be those of the HSDPA (vodacom) connection, namely:

DNS servers 196.207.40.165 (assigned by vodacom)

196.43.46.190 (assigned by vodacom)


WINS servers 10.11.12.13 (assigned by vodacom)

10.11.12.14

.....works a treat for me.

If you disable DHCP on your router, your wife's PC would get settings from the ICS machine (which does DHCP), no need to manually set them up.

If you insist on setting her PC up manually, you can set her primary DNS to the same as your ICS machine (192.168.0.1) and leave the secondary DNS and WINS servers blank.

I have vista, she xp home. XP Home seems crippled when it comes to networking. I tried your suggestion, and variants of it, in the past and it didn't seem to want to work for me. The router is a linksys wrt54gl running tomato firmware. Also, this stops her pc logging on to our neighbours network which despite my telling her (the neighbour) she leaves unsecured!

And I can also bring extra pc's into the network this way and prevent them using the internet automatically (kids, babysitters, other trustworthy types...:) )
 
I have a similar setup running configured as follows:

PC with ICS and 3G card set to static IP address 192.168.0.1. (Maybe not necessary, but there were times I had problems related to this so I kept it static!)

Router IP set to 192.168.0.2 with DHCP enabled - any PCs connected to the wireless router will get their IP from the router before a request is sent to the ICS PC - just make sure the allocatable IP range excludes .1 and .2. Set the router's gateway to 192.168.0.1 and DNS server to the same. PCs getting IP from the router then also pick up this info.

I found that pointing the DNS to 192.168.0.1 causes the request to go there and the ICS computer then routes on to the DNS servers it picks up from the mobile network.

Also if you turn off DHCP on the router but don't turn on the ICS PC then any other PCs on the network won't get an IP - of course not a problem if you only have 2 pcs on the LAN!
