Hi All,

Need some help. I am currently connecting my modem using a LAN cable, but this means I lose some functonality due to the fact that I do not install the modem software and can not use the bandwith monitoring program or signal strenth tester

I do however believe I am getting better speed to my Duel Chip Toshiba using lan instead of a USB port

Any recommendation on the best method of connection ?

I've heard a lot of people saying that usb connections are very unreliable and unstable. So I think that using lan cable is a bit better. Not sure what exactly the reason for the usb thing is or if it's just usb only modems.

I think you should try it atleast once and judge for yourself. Install all the software and if the usb connection gives problems, switch back to lan and see if the problem persists. It is important to switch to lan as soon as you have the problem to make sure that it's a usb problem and not a telkom problem ;)

IMO, the functionality provided by the desktop app is of dubious value at best.

Id rather just check my bandwidth from the website and use UTtracestar to get a real indication of signal strength.

It is nice to use the bandwidth checker, but it just uses more system recourses, a LAN cable connection is better imo.

Does anyone know what my problem is if i can't connect via LAN?

I set it up, it works fine. Then the next day when I connect it doesn't connect. I think there's no connection to the modem. Weird as the ethernet connection is enabled, etc. Is there something I must reset, since it worked and then doesn't work?

Tjorries, try disabling the firewall on that specific network card and see if things help... otherwise you might have a problematic NIC, cable or modem. What's the OS of choice?

Also, delete the specific dial-up account, and recreate it.

Personally, I prefer Ethernet modems above USB modems, as USB tend to give funny problems. Besides, Ethernet is widely supported on Linux distros (and Windows as well), while USB is generally suited for Windows only.
