I see Land Rover just sneaked into the Top 10 most reliable engines.

http://motoring.iafrica.com/features/836833.html

Engine Reliability - Top 10
1 Honda - 0.29 percent failure rate
2 Toyota - 0.58 percent failure rate
3 Mercedes-Benz - 0.84 percent failure rate
4 Volvo - 0.90 percent failure rate
5 Jaguar - 0.98 percent failure rate
6 Lexus - 0.99 percent failure rate
7 Fiat - 1.17 percent failure rate
8 Ford - 1.25 percent failure rate
9 Nissan - 1.32 percent failure rate
10 Land Rover - 1.38 percent failure rate

Engine Reliability - Bottom 10
1 MG Rover - 7.88 percent failure rate
2 Audi - 3.71 percent failure rate
3 Mini - 2.51 percent failure rate
4 Saab - 2.49 percent failure rate
5 Vauxhall (Opel) - 2.46 percent failure rate
6 Peugeot - 2.26 percent failure rate
7 BMW - 2.20 percent failure rate
8 Renault - 2.13 percent failure rate
9 Volkswagen - 1.91 percent failure rate
10 Mitsubishi - 1.70 percent failure rate

lol @ German Engineering.
Vorsprung durch kakaanjaag.

Surprised to see Mitsubishi in the bottom 10, more so than seeing Landy in top 10. :wtf:

I find the result of a 50 000 sample (live consumer policies) too limited, also does it include the same models or the overall manufacturer, and does this also count for shared components… Various other factors like aftermarket parts, mechanic replacements, service intervals etc. All this data is collected from one country only which is England. I will say that their research is more of a suggestion trend rather than a fact.

That is a very big sample, as samples go, the conclusions should be realistic.

So they have a top 10 and bottom 10, that is 20 manufactures only, where is the in between? How many units of each manufacturer did they sample to the total of 50 000? Which year and models?

I would most certainly like to see the research reports.

Remember also that reliability is dependent on factories.
Some factories in SA (VW, toyota, Merc) quite highly rated in term of reliability.
Also imported vehicles can be subject to different quality checks (in other words, they can Africa all the crappy vehicles)

I would trust an acknowledged research organisation with this kind of data. I will not trust research done by Warranty Direct (http://www.warrantydirect.co.uk) which is part of Cardif Pinnacle Group of Companies (http://www.cardifpinnacle.com), bunch of insurance… I believe that warranties and insurance have tons to do with premiums…

Edit: The data were probably taken from their own records.

How does Audi come in at 2 and VW at 9 when they essentially use the same engines in both brands?

Audi will grab and retune the 'higher-end' VW engines for their lineup. Higher output, newer / unproven technologies....

Land Rover uses the Ford motor...for all intense and purposes it should then be 8th.

Tata and Rover and Jaguar also uses the same engine, but it has been modified by each of them (from 60KW for the Tata to 140KW for the LR).
