I want to have a line installed so that I can make the move to ADSL at home but the R500+ line installation fee is highly irritating. I see Telkom have a Closer promo whereby you get a free wifi router and mobile data along with free line installation but it appears one needs to sign a 24 month contract.

I have excess cap from my office so this Closer plan is not ideal and the contract is

Any other trick to avoid getting stung with the installation fee?

no

Its month to month, unless the terms has changed, I signed up 2 or 3 months ago cancelled after 1.

The promo has a free wifi router and free 3G modem with 200mb data for 12 months - did you get the same deal? I want the free install and will then cull the Simple and just keep the adsl and line.....

They never mentioned a fee to me when I got my line installed last month so I challenged them about it and got nowhere. I complained about the whole episode on hellopeter saying it is anti competitive and surely illegal. They called me last week and credited the fee back into my account.

Made no sense to me but I'll gladly accept the R655 plus vat back thank you very much.

"Customer must sign a compulsory debit order and 24 month sales agreement to pay off the device"

That is what is making me nervous, but I see on the same page you can add a laptop to the deal and pay it off over 24 months. THIS must be the device they are referring to! Awesome, going to order my line :)

What wifi router did you get? Model?

I remember your thread, nice of them

Thank you for the clarification! How long did it take them to install the line from the day you ordered and what method did you use to order (walk in shop / call centre / web)?

Web- they called back same day.
2 weeks TAT.
Had 3 techs on separate occasions and the guys digging up the lawn as well.

Mooi! And how did you get the Netgear and the 3G modem? Walk in shop or with the tech?

The last tech brought the router. The 3g modem I had to go to about 5 Telkom Direct shops before I found one. Their offices don't have phone numbers. RICA docs needed in store.

First tech came to assess and saw no line, as if I didn't tell them up front about this. So he closed the call after he left.
I followed up a few days later to check if all's in order, sorry job closed, open new job.
2nd tech from site inspection came and saw ok there is no line, book the diggers to come out on Saturday.
3rd tech came the next Monday and connected everything up.

Don't let them close the job. Call 10213 with your order number to check.

OK cool, I have filled in their mini "call me back form" as I could find no official order page apart from this call me back. Previous owner of the house had a line with adsl so the physical line is still attached to our house and just needs to be joined with twisted pair and run inside.

I want to go with Afrihost as their bundled deals for data and line are cheaper and I can make the business pay for it as well as we already use some of their services / already have an account with them. My plan is to get this installation done and then cancel so that I can get Afrihost on board.
