Hi guys.

I have a Dell vostro a860 that is not used/used very infrequently. Yesterday I checked the HDD temp and it covers at ~55-58 C. I was looking at overclocking the CPU and one of the temp monitors kept stating that the HDD temp is too high.

6 months ago I upgraded the CPU from a dual core t2450 to a c2d t7300. Is this the reason for the high HDD temp at idle?

The CPU hovers at 58 C idle.

Thanks.

Most hard drives will start to fail above 60C, so I'd be worried with it running so close to max temps.

Make sure all the fans on the laptop is working properly and that none of the air-intake/outlets are blocked. If one of those puppies are gone the entire laptop heats up like crazy. Consider swapping the hard drive for an SSD. Lower power consumption means lower temperatures/longer battery life as well as a nice speed boost. If you need a bigger HDD you can always use the one you have now as an external one to keep files on and such.

If you don't want to splash on SSD, I'd suggest getting one of those laptop coolers that you push in underneath the laptop that usually has more fans/designed to cool it down a bit more.
