Laptop - 2nd hand or cheap one?

My main computer is upstairs and I am thinking of getting a laptop to use around the house connected to my wifi router. I will be installing linux on it (probably debian).

So should I go for a nothing fancy new one, or choose a similar priced 2nd hand one (probably not so old). Also is there a reputable place to pick up 2nd hand laptops?
 
Best to buy a new one, you never know what problems will you buy with a 2nd hand unit.

Also, if something breaks on the new lappy, you can get it fixed for free, but expect to pay a lot should a 2nd hand lappy breaks something.
 
plz 6499 go to hi fi corp and pick up a sahara one for 4399 less if you not using windows

i saw deals of 3999 for a 1.6 512 meg 40 gig hdd with 15" display

i sell many of them, i have also never had any problems that taking the battery out for 10 seconds could not solve
 
Just buy a laptop with at least a Core2Duo, if you decide to put Windows on it later. My Celeron is taking strain with Microsoft Office 2007... :(

Buy a laptop from Hi Fi Corp :eek:

Stay far away from Hi Fi Corp :)

2007 seems to be a resource hog on almost any system, although I think that's more RAM dependent than CPU dependent.

It's crap anyway, they moved everything around so it ends up taking longer to get things done. 2003 ftw ;)

2007 runs like a charm on my Virtual Machine with 512Mb RAM ...
 
Runs like a snail on my desktop P4 3Ghz 1GB RAM :(

It's not worth the effort to me anyway, they changed too much in terms of the interface. You end up spending way too much time hunting around for stuff.
