So I need a new laptop for general home use- browsing, downloading, email, Word etc.
Got 2 prices:
- Lenovo Thinkpad Edge S430, i5, 4 GB Ram, 14 inch, dvd writer, webcam at R6 900

- Lenovo Ideapad G580, 4GB Ram, B960 processor at R 5 000
Would appreciate advice on these two or other ones that would suit my needs.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks Dude

Found the G580 for R4099 on guzzle.
Also can get the HP CQ 58 for R4 000.

Which is the better of the 2?

Those units are practically identical - but there are some minor differences.

I'd recommend comparing these two reviews to decide which is better for you:

Personally I'd take the G580 because (a) I trust Lenovo more these days (completely subjective), and (b) the G580 has USB 3.0.

If I was at all concerned about heat I'd take the CQ58 which runs a bit cooler.

Wife bought a G580 at Makro for R5999 a while back with 2-year on-site warranty. Lots of trail bloatware but after getting rid of it all it runs like a dream. Looks nice too. Came with Office 365 and I wangled a Win 8 Pro w/Media Center upgrade key for R500.

Agreed re the bloatware bogging things down, but sadly that's practically industry standard these days. Particularly on these cheaper machines.
