My 5 year old Mede8er died on me :(, and I am looking for something to replace it.

One option is that I have a decent HP core2 duo laptop with an HDMI port that I no longer really use. The only thing is that I think I will lose some sound quality as it only has a simple headphone line-out port (I have a Logitech Z-5500 speaker system in the lounge). Is it worth using the laptop, or should I just bite the bullet and buy a WD Live / another Mede8er?

You would be able to play 1080p hd with that laptop and maybee of a power safer as well. The sound is going to be awfull on a superior souns system like that. Rather buy a usb soundcard or other media player?

HDMI transmits both sound and image so you should get decent sound on your TV and if the TV has digital or optical out, you can connect to you speakers using any of those options.

+1 for this - use the HDMI for the video / sound from that laptop. How was the Mede8er connected, directly to the TV or through an amp then to the TV?

TV only has a standard audio-out unfortunately. I connected the mede8er to the sound system directly using coax.
