Laptop battery life?

Hi all! What about the laptop gives the battery better life span or longer hours. Is it the battery itself or the technology in the laptop or both? I have a laptop but i cant run it without the external power because it will just go dead after 5min. Instead of buying a new laptop i was thinking of just getting a new and better battery because my original battery even when it was new it only lasted for about 1hour MAX.

Any suggestions?
 
you need to google the different technologies, some types of batteries last longer than others etc. etc, also you can play with the settings on your laptop to give yourself a bit of extra time, like turn down the screen brightness, slow the CPU, turn off HDD stuff like that
 
It has to do with both. If the laptop is power optimised, i.e. designed to use the least amount of power under battery operating conditions, then you would get a longer life out of an ordinary battery. Sometimes this includes, reducing the brightness of the display, limiting the processor and I'm am sure a few other power management tweaks. There are also different battery technologies, with the latest lithium polymers performing much better than lithium ion batteries. If they make a lithium polymer for your laptop I'd doubt that you'd get more than 2 hours anyway because the machine sounds power hungry. Lit Pol batteries are expensive.
 
1.U need to look at what CPU is in there is it High or Low voltage i.e Celeron vs Centrino

2.If you use integrated wifi on notebook and it is switched on permanently you will get 25-30% less battery time

3.What powerplan profile you using

4.Find out if u can get high capacity battery (6,8,9 cell )

Thanks for all the replies. I have a entry level laptop. The HP 530 with core duo cpu. When i run on battery i usually set the brightness to LOW and usually put the WiFi on when needed only. I dont know which battery i have but its the original one. Maybe i should get a better battery hey?
 
Well if you intend using the laptop for extended periods rather buy a second battery and keep it charged.

You get some like 6 or 8 cell batteries as well.

I have heard that a USB memory stick can sap the battery even when it is not used, i.e. plugged in but not accessed. May just be a rumour.

I suspect your battery is shot.
You should get much longer life on that particular laptop. If it's still under warranty have the battery replaced. Else you can also look into repacking the cells or just get a new one

Lithium batteries lose power over their lifetime. You can open up your battery and replace the lithium cells in it to rejuvenate it for much lower than the price of a new battery. There are services for this in South Africa, if you search around eg.

Of course this will only restore the original battery life of your computer.
