Yes, another laptop question :) But it's not a wide open one, it's a choice between two with similar specs and pricing:

The Lenovo G530;
or the Acer Extensa 5645.

I had wanted the Lenovo, now I'm tending towards the Acer; but whereas I read really good reviews of the Lenovo, I can't really find any reviews of the Acer. Any thoughts?

When I bought my laptop 2 years ago I had the choice between Acer and Lenovo.

I bought the Acer because Lenovo was an unknown brand that time.

Acer has better support from what I have heard, they will collect the laptop from your house and repair it at their centre, all for free. Thats IF you ever experience problems.

Lenovo = IBM. I've recommended that particular model several times, heard nothing but good reviews. At the R7k mark I don't think there is anything to match it. Acer build quality isn't terrible but it doesn't compare to IBM.

Sorry, I'm pedantic :)

Lenovo is not IBM, IBM sold their PC devision to Lenovo. The engineers and designers have also moved to Lenovo. My Thinkpad T61 is after the Lenovo switch-over and the build quality is still stunning, my friend's extremely happy with his T500.

Though the G series is not a Thinkpad, it's still better imo than an Acer.

IBM still do Lenovo support, and I've had utterly amazing service from IBM.

One big plus with Lenovo, they do allow you to add/upgrade the RAM and hard drive but please confirm this as I'm not sure if it's for their other models, but it is with their Thinkpads.

Cool, it looks like my first instincts were right, then :) The advantages of the Acer is that the CPU supports VT, it's a collect and repair warranty (vs drop-off and collect) and it has a multitouch touchpad; it also supports 802.11n and bluetooth, but that's not terribly important to me. And I don't like the way the touchpad is offset to the left, I suspect that will really get annoying quite fast.

The Lenovo has a dialup modem (useful for faxes), and a better built-in camera. But more important to me is the build quality, and the noise factor - apparently the Lenovo is a very quiet (and cool) running laptop.
