I just turned on my wifes laptop and I was greeted with a quick BSOD (so fast I can even read it) and the lappie just reboots. I have tried almost everything - safe mode - same thing happens; Last know config - same thing. I have booted from the WinXP CD and first I tried to do a Repair - CHKDSK /F and it tells me something about it can’t find the autoex.exe (cant remember exactly, but couldn’t find a specific file either on the HD or CD to perform the check disk) I have thought I would do a repair by reinstalling and when the partition screen comes up it basically says that the partition of 60 gig is unknown and says that no space is being used.

What the heck must I do? Any ideas please chaps.

Thanks

Grim

Edit: I just tried another CHKDSK and it says AUTOCHK.exe could not be located ont he HD or CDrom - The CD rom is also dead, I cant open it? Wtf

Two scenarios :

1. The HDD is toast - and need to be replaced. The CD-Rom unit also might need replacement, I've found that most CD-Rom unit pack up after a while.

2. Your IDE/SATA controller have packed up - hence the dead HDD and CD-Rom unit. To test for this, connect an external unit (HDD, CD-Rom or USB stick) with an operating system installed and check if it will boot.

Thanks libs,

The PC does boot with the XP screen and then Reboots, thats why I suspect it is a software issue rather than hardware, also the CD does work, it boots the XP disk, but then doesnt seem to work when I am in the recovery console :(

Where can I get a Linux live cd - must be local as I am capped. I have an old knoppix Live disc but it is toast.

Where can I get a IDE cable for a Laptop drive? IE : I want to be able to plug my latptop HD into my PC as a slave drive and try recover the data.

I FIXED IT! I used a different XP disc, it allowed me to do a CHKDSK and WHALLA fixed. :D

It is already NTFS

Hi Grimspoon

I would like to suggest you use a program such as CCleaner , this is a brilliant piece of software which should sort out most of your issues , we use it everyday when clients bring in Notebooks and PC;s for repairs , you will not believe how many systems we have fixed in about 5 minutes using this software

it will also speed up your notebook's performance just like the day your purchased it . Try it you have nothing to lose.

download this from www.filehippo.com
