Hi guys and girls

I need a new laptop, I have no idea what to get other than I need to use it for 3D CAD design
An that it can't cost more than R8k. I haven't been into computers since before dual-core so I don't know squat anymore. Does anyone have any recommendations? any pointers would be appreciated.

Does it have to be a laptop?

You're going to battle a bit with that budget + CAD requirements I think.

Hectic CAD stuff or not really?

Your budget is a bit low, why don't you look at a buying a second hand i7 with dedicated graphics for that price.
I'm sure you'll be able to pick one up online.

I don't need anything too hectic, I use integrated 3D software like Revit and ArchiCAD bit of Sketchup for quick models obviously mainly for architectural use, not much more.

I would prefer a Laptop as it will give me mobility. I do need a new desktop but that is for another time.

At a push I can afford R10k but I really don't want that. I'm also very nervous of second hand laptops, especially laptops. The conditions they were run in vary quite a lot and load on hardware from someone who say used their laptop in bed is massive compared to someone who ran it on desks. There are too many variables for me to throw R8000 at it.

Grab a mid range laptop, max RAM and replace HDD with a SSD.

Take specific care on the GFX front... as lara says you get laptops with dedicated gfx...but the newer gen CPUs have decent built in gfx...so you need to eyeball that trade-off carefully. That is very much dependent on the specific CPU generation.

Personally I reckon a 6k laptop with a ssd will outperform a 10k laptop without one purely on perceived experience.
