The SO bought one of these just a couple of weeks ago, we regularly use it to watch HD content. Not the fastest machine but would definitely work for HD playback.

When you say its not the fastest machine - whats the issues? Laggy performance, long boot up times?

If it has an HDMI output it can play HD videos.
Nothing more to be said.
It's not like HD videos suddenly need some top end GPU to run.

I have been burnt, I have a machine with HDMI port, HD videos stutter. Used VLC to play the videos.

That's codecs then most likely and not the machine itself.
I have a Dual core machine at home with 2Mb of ram that we use as a media player.
Old Fujitsu laptop, runs just fine all day long.

Try Potplayer, works much better than vlc, hd via lan also a lot less stuttery if the host pc is crap
