I recently switched out my laptop hhd for a ssd. I wanted to use it as a storage hdd in my pc but its really slow. its a 5400rpm drive. Is it the fact that its a laptop drive that makes it so slow?

It is a 5400rpm they are generally cheaper and slower.

You get 3.5" HDDs that are 5400rpm too. They are perfect for storage due to the price point.

You're using it for storage. Go make yourself coffee while it's copying.

Not at all. I have a bunch of 5400rpm drives. You don't speed to store stuff. Even if you're accessing it directly to watch movies etc, it's not an issue.

I use my old laptop hdd as a backup drive. If you want slow, get a verbatim flash drive, damn are they slow, even if its a usb 3 model. 3mbs copy speed is crazy slow these days.

But most external drives are 5400rpm drives, so it wouldn't be the issue. They are slow, but if its really slow, it could be the casing you're running it in. I found some faster than others ironically.

You cant go from a ssd and compare and older drive anyway, its night and day difference. If you do want faster speeds, buy an ssd external drive, but seriously its just wasting money. I would rather sit with a 4tb external and have coffee and lunch in between than a 512gb external where I don't have to wait for the coffee.

And if you're a pirate, then you're a bad one, as pirates don't worry about speed, but capacity. the larger the ship, the more gold it can hold. arghhh arghhhh
