I have a set of Taotronics SoundSurge 85's that I got on special for I think R699 a while back and I am really happy with them. I use them to listen to music and I get through about a week on a charge. They are quite comfortable as they are over-ear design, but discreet with no RGB or flashy designs.

The ANC works decent, but doesn't match up to pricier offerings from the more established brands

Thanks for the info its appreciated.

Anker Soundcore Life P3 Bluetooth earbuds are incredible, especially when on special at R999.

Please don't be that person that uses the built in laptop speakers.. never in the history of laptops, have the built in speakers been great..

Get some half decent Bluetooth in ears or headphones instead..
I've had Apple laptops with decent built in speakers that play YouTube vids and music at a good volume with good sound quality.

I then bought a 14” MacBook Pro and was completely blown away. It sounds like it has a small soundbar and sub built in. Outstanding volume and sound quality.

I would encourage you to walk into Incredible Connection and experience it for yourself, free of charge. It would change your tune and you would no longer be ignorant about laptop speakers.

It's not about the product. I am not disagreeing with you

I just don't want to support that company it's personal preference

Again, I own a 14" MacBook Pro.. I am not impressed with the sound..

Compared to which laptops?
Does it matter..? I have already covered it in my previous post, but does it really matter..? What is there to convince me of..? I already own a Mac and the sound does not impress me..

My initial post was in any way in reference to windows laptops, given the OP bought a windows laptop..

Yes it matters because we are taking about laptops and speaker quality, and you’re saying they’re all bad which is objectively untrue.

A more reasonable statement would be that most are bad, but that some are good. What you’re saying reinforces false beliefs in those who have never experienced good laptop speakers. Surely we want to be as objective, helpful and truthful as possible?

It has nothing to do with Apple either, except that they have the best laptop speakers on the market. Years ago HP laptops with Beats Audio even had built-in sub woofers. I’m sure there are many other brands that have somewhat decent laptop audio that I do not know of.

So, which laptops are you comparing it to that it does not impress you?

Because it sounds like you’re unimpressed because dedicated speakers sound better. That is ridiculous because dedicated speakers are not laptops, so it’s obvious that laptop speakers would not impress when comparing to something completely different. It’s not a like for like comparison, and is therefore just silly.

“The MacBook Pro 14-inch (2023) impressed me elsewhere, with its speakers pushing out fantastic audio that sounded full and rich.”

“The Apple MacBook Pro 14 inch has great speakers. They sound full and well-balanced, with a lot more bass than most laptop speakers.”

So, please. Please explain why you’re unimpressed, when everyone else is?

My fave pair are these:

I got them for R700 on special.
What I like about them is the battery life span, independent use (left / right) built-in mic and extra battery charger in the case (when you put them away, they charge from the case's battery)

So I guess now it's a job to find a decent pair of BT earphones or headset. Any recommendations for something discreet ?

Budget?

You can spend R700.00 on on something which will probably be fine, or you can spend several R1000's on something which will be better especially if you want good noise cancellation etc.

I am no fundi on this, and use a pair of AirPods which I received as a gift - they are great, but in my opinion expensive for what you get.

You should try to go and test a few options of possible, with your setup if that is possible.

My 2c: If you care about latency, avoid using Bluetooth, it's shaky at best.
Something like a Logitech G733 with its lightspeed connector would be ideal if you want wireless, otherwise any pair of Sennheiser wired monitor headphones will have absolutely impeccable quality. (No built-in mic on these though, so you'd have to use the laptop's built-in one for zooms and stuff.)

Got this beast the other day.

MSI Pretige 14 Evo Laptop
11th gen Core i7-1185G7 @3.0GHz

32gb Ram, 512gb SSD

I have never seen a machine boot up this quick. Even with all my software loaded.
It's insane.
Only issue is the screen is a little small and the speakers are crap.
Very low volume even on full.
Is there a workaround ?
Otherwise the machine is blazing fast.
Makes my desktop look like an old man with a walking stick.
Truly insane startup speeds

Is there a way to increase the volume somehow beyond 100 percent ? Surely I'm not the only one complaining ?
External Screen. I prefer Dell P Series, the P2717H, P2719H, not the 4H model as wont have hdmi, same with the 24" which is basically just P2417H P2419H if youre looking second hand, the newer ones on Takealot. The 27" is about 400 more than the 24".

You get speakers or if you have a bluetooth speaker you can use that. But most USB powered speakers suck. Logitech has a pair of stereo ones but not the best. Is ok, just not great. Headphones work too.

As for your speed increase, normally its fast boot that can help with older machines, although running an NVME drive can make a difference.

Generally hdd speeds

170MB/s is a upto the max of a normal spinning HDD (7200rpm)
550MB/s is how fast the best 2.5" SSD will go (Samsung EVO/PRO)
2000-3500 for M.2 Sata (Samsungs)
5500-20000 for NVME SSD Drives, athough most of the fastest ones on the market run at about 7450MBPS (Samsung 990 PRO).

DO NOTE THAT THERE ARE M.2 SATA and M.2 NVME (CHECK WHICH ONE IS SUPPORTED VIA THE CRUCIAL UPGRADE SITE AND GET THE RIGHT ONE)

So changing an old laptop from a spinning drive to a SSD drive makes a bigger difference then adding more ram would. Some older ones only support upto 8GB of RAM (Crucial has a compatibility checker that helps you figure out how much and their ram is really good).

However some laptop manufacturers will put in a 2.5" SSD Drive into your machine and you will go WOW, I got SATA, but when you open it up you may find out they used a 2.5" even though there are NVME slots that will run even faster. Yip all this is because it costs a bit more and they are trying to save on costs. If you can run nvme its great. You however dont need to run Fast Startup times on them, because it will shorted the lifespan on an nvme, and quite honestly, you wont really notice the difference anyway. They are fast. Always try to get at least a Samsung EVO, EVO PLUS or PRO. There is actually a difference in the speed between manufacturers.

ie 83% speed difference between the 980 pro and WD Blue nvme, and a 39% between the Blue and Samsung Evo Plus.

Running a movie on VLC can boost sound above 100% but it will use more battery power.
