I recently bought a Samsung NP350V5C laptop. As soon as I took it out of the box I noticed that the spacebar on the keyboard squeaked loudly, every time I pressed it. I then noticed that a panel at the bottom was loose, and returned the laptop, receiving another of the same unit in exchange. The new one's panel is fine, but the spacebar squeaks just like the last.

I've had a look online, and it seems that a number of other brands have laptops that do this too. Is it common? What causes it? Bad manufacturing?

I tried to find out if there was anything I could do to fix it myself, but, as usual, found contradicting replies to similar threads. Some people claim one can safely remove chiclet keys, while others object to this. Some claim certain lubricants work, others say they are dangerous.

What would be the best way to rectify this? Seeing as though this is the 2nd unit to do this, I don't even think there's any point in returning it, as the next is likely to have the same problem.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Use a lubricant, I know that sewing machine oil is the best for Pc fans, maybe you can use that also for this, otherwise you could maybe use baby oil?

Solution: Return it. Get your money back. Buy another brand of laptop! Samsung and laptop... They don't go well together in my experience... Theres been a few good Lenovo specials around, Asus... If you can afford it HP but preferably a nice shiny Dell Inspiron :)

That whole story about trying to repair the spacebar sounds futile... I removed a laptop key once by mistake... The force of the vacuum popped it out... I could never... Ever get it to clip back in again. So be warned!

I would rather suggest a bit of silicone grease in this scenario.

A chiclet key?

Not every retailer will allow this. You will be very lucky if you can just ask for your money back.

Yeah, I've just been offered a swap for another one at this point.

I've heard about sewing machine oil and then also permatex dielectric lube and white lithium grease. Are one of those silicone grease? I'm quite confused as to which will work best. All I know is to use one that is compatible with electronic circuitry and one that doesn't contain petroleum as this is not suitable for plastic.

Ask them if you can go for a different laptop entirely, otherwise fix the squeak yourself or live with it.

Well considering I spent so long (a few months) trying to find the perfect laptop, I'm not keen to start looking all over again. I really don't mind fixing it myself, but is it even possible to do that?

-Will lubrication be the solution?
-Can chiclet keys be removed?
