Looking to buy a new laptop with a budget of up to R5000 or so.

It will be used for emails and music and basic stuff like Word and web browsing.

What are the best options at the moment?

Thanks, but unfortunately 5000 is pretty much the highest -- less would be better.

I saw in another thread an iLife laptop being mentioned, anyone havbe experience?

These weeny notebooks with 32 / 64 GB of flash storage are awful. Often Windows 10 runs into problems updating because of the lack of available storage space and then you end up in frustrating boot loops (not to be confused with froot loops).

Add to that, the screens are small with low resolutions, weak backlights, faded colours, keyboards are horrible, and trackpads usually aren't great either. The celeron CPUs aren't actually that much of an issue, it's everything else that they're surrounded with.

Something like this would perform much better:

The only caveat emptor with buying secondhand is that you may get a bit of a lemon. Ideal if someone you know and trust has an extra laptop surplus to requirements which you could purchase.
