But depends on what you want. Bigger screen or more ram or better processor?

Hm I just got an Acer 5732Z - costs r7k new from IC and it's really gorgeous. 15.6", LED backlit, full keyboard with numeric pad, 4gb/500gb/2.3ghz processor. For 10k you won't get that much better - there aren't really decent gaming lappies for that price.

Thinkpads are built with Carbon Fibre reinforced polymere (42% stronger than titanium), the LED screen is protected with a honeycomb backing, they test the hinges to some few million or so open and closes so it won't go floppy on you. The Finger print reader is at level 3 security, this means you can not do the Mythbusters trick with it. ISO keyboard is splash proof, if you spill coffee on it, rinse the sticky off with water, they even design the keys so that you won't hurt your fingers on it. All LENOVO's use DDR3 memory. The battery life they quote is how long it will last as you use it, not the laptop just sitting at idle like the other manufacturers do.
So really there is no comparison with build quality.

We use Lenovo laptops at work and they can take quite a beating, multiple spills of coffee and coke on them and they still going

I ordered the above WC model (Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit) from the USA, total cost was R8200.

Great machine, performs very well !

Incredible Connection actually has some really good laptop prices.

For the same price kalahari offers you that with half the RAM, not the ATI graphics card, smaller disk and slightly slower CPU.

They also have one (Inspiron) for R8000 which has basically the same specs, just not the graphics card and (I think) a slightly smaller screen.

The also have some Sony Viaos which look really nice, more capable, faster CPU, an nvidia graphics card (which I'm still for some reason biased towards), but the screen is just tiny (portability plus) and the price notably higher. The warranty is also just 1 year, where the Dell has 4 year local+international warranties. From personal experience I can state that Dell support is really really at the top of my list of deciding factors.

I would actually really like to know what the import costs was on Jola's post there. Although Incredible has some nice offers, sometimes you want something different which you can't find locally.

You can get a Mecer i7 laptop with 17" screen, 500GB hard drive and ATI 4570 w/ 512MB dedicated graphics for about R10k. :)

The question is...What is the build quality like on these new Mecer laptops?

The laptop in the Incredible Connection link is pretty much exactly what Im looking

I've been staring at that one and the R8000 Inspiron one for a long time now, really need to replace my 4 year old squeaky laptop (also Dell Inspiron).

Just a heads-up: A quick google on that ATI graphics card's support under ubuntu did not bode well, so I'd actually say that the cheaper one is better in that sense, unless you're going the windows gaming road. Intel provides proper linux drivers for their cards, or at least, makes it possible for communities to make fully capable drivers.

Apart from the graphics card (the ATI provides an HDMI output) and the elevated brand name of Dell Studio, I can't see much difference between the two...
