Hi All

I was looking for a new laptop but stuck between an Asus Vivobook S16 OLED and a HP Envy x360 16" OLED.

Looking at something for work and some light gaming and a premium feel but more keen on the screen.

Anyone can share their views on the better option? Specs are close enough only difference is processors Asus is a Intel Core Ultra 5 and HP is Ryzen 5 8640HS

If its about some light Gaming and they're both using GPUs as part of the CPU package, I'd tend towards the Ryzen machine, but if thats not a HUGE concern for you then it would be more about the warranty and after sales support for the machine.

Hp ryzen 5 is a no brainer and considering the internal gpu can handle most games and apps.
Well, the Arc GPU should be slightly faster, but this is more going to be a case of what exact game with both probably handling e-titles and older games and that's it.

The Intel chip should probably have a little better battery life due to the e-cores, but don't think the difference is going to be much and I would pick the AMD due to being homogeneous cores, e-cores on desktop have been annoying for certain stuff but it's fine nowadays / since release, so if actual usage I'm expecting the AMD system to have better battery life in most cases if just CPU.

I dunno, I'd probably pick based on whether other features are good/bad, stuff like do you want a number pad or a more centered keyboard, how's the upgrade-ability for RAM/storage and network card.

Always the MacBook
Honestly if the Air had a cooling fan I would have went for it.

If I could get a 16 inch Macbook at the same price as these laptops I would go for it

The insultingly low 256GB storage is sad and I already am in the Apple ecosystem Mac would have been the last thing missing.

According to iStore the display is an IPS ?

 no thanks.

Then choose the one with the better warranty.
HP has 3 years and Asus has 1

Plus burned by Asus when my ROG charger gave up after 3 months they have denied a warranty claim saying chargers don't fall under warranty

On brand go for Asus. On CPU go Ryzen. Never go for Apple.
Just saw someone said there is 3 years warranty on HP and 1 on Asus. Go Asus then.

Well according to what I saw online the Mac Airs thermal throttle and Mac gaming still is not there yet.

Maybe I'll pop into iStore to have a look but the price of the Air with that low storage is off putting

You can add thermal pads but for most people it's a non issue. I don't want a fan and the noise. External type C ssd's are cheap anyway so the lack of storage is a non issue.

Probably will be light stuff mostly Fortnite, have a gaming PC for anything more demanding

Unfortunately with the upgrade path all these machines has that awful LPDDR5 memory.

Haven't found a nice OLED 16" laptop with upgradeable Ram

Make sure you get or upgrade to an Onsite Warranty, regardless of which notebook you choose.

Collect, repair and Return warranties are a nightmare.

If you have a 3 Year Onsite Warranty, the brand does not really matter.

There’s your answer then.

Wouldn’t even consider ASUS after a poor previous experience like that.

Appreciate everyone's responses

Likely will go for the HP, I do need software that only runs on Windows so the mac might be considered if I can run a VM on the work server

Thanks guys!
