Didn't see any official threads for such questions, so guess I'll just ask here.

Considering getting myself a new laptop sometime next year, budget likely around the 10k to 15k range. Would prefer an i7 with 8GB of RAM for future proofing, would likely be used mostly for work but with a bit of gaming as well so I would at least like to be able to run current games smoothly, not concerned about graphics quality too much to be honest.

Any input? My current laptop is an acer and seems to be holding up well enough after 6 years, but definitely won't touch any HP models in the near future.

Not a stupid question! Dell have a few ranges in home and business ranges.

The home user notebooks are cheaper and more plastic, also more designer (colors/design elements)
The business notebooks are build with aluminium frames, and bit bland on the design side. Due to the materials used, you can use it daily and it will still look good after 2 or 3 years.

So Latitude is for business use, its a work horse, and doesnt show wear and tear quickly.
Inspirion is in the home section, spec wise similar, but colorfull and design elements. Unfortunately plastic is present.

If you want desktop replacement notebooks, very good spec, then XPS on the home side, and Precision on the Business side.

Vostro is entry level mostly on home user side.

I don't know how's your eyesight, but I have promised myself that my next notebook must have a full HD display.

Not sure why tablets and phones have full HD displays, yet laptops are still stuck in 2012.

Just did a quick search, for some reason I like this one a lot : http://www.landmarkpc.co.za/store/a...re-i74710hq-25ghz-touch-notebook-p-13066.html

*Mind you, I'm the worst person to ask. I'm using a Celeron NUC as my main pc. Like this little potent box so much, I've put my laptop back in the bag. :D

That looks like a good machine, and I agree with you. Should definitely be Full HD on a laptop, heck at the moment my phone has the most pixels out of all my gadgets!

Talking about the display - that is the one thing you really need to be sure of.

Nowadays, all the high-end laptops have an i7 CPU with 16GB RAM, Intel Iris graphics/maybe PRO, and SSD or hybrid drive.

But I still see a huge discrepancy between the quality and brightness of displays from different manufacturers.

Since you will be looking at the display all the time, make sure it's a brilliant one. :)

Oh, and battery life should also be high up on your list.

Happy hunting!
