I have a little problem.

When I try to turn on the laptop, it turns off right after it displays
" Checking NVRAM... ".

I tried swapping my 2 ram modules, removing and reinserting them and
tried starting the laptop with only 1 RAM module inserted.

I also removed the CMOS battery and replaced it after 10 minutes.

I also tried turning the laptop on with only the battery, without the
battery with the charger in, and with the battery and charger in.

Lastly I checked that the laptop wasn't in Sleep/Hibernate/Standby mode.

None of it helped. Any advice on what could be wrong or how I can fix it? I dont want to take it in for repairs....

Cheers

NVRAM has nothing to do with your RAM modules.

It's non-volatile ram that keeps it's contents even when powered off. Usually used for things like bios settings & configs etc.

What make & model laptop is it?

I bought the RAM 2 weeks ago. Will try and get some other RAM to test it.

It is an Mercer Power Notebook, about 5 years old. I know its old, but I need to fix it.

The only times I had the same error that this guy had was when my RAM was faulty.

5 year old Laptop, could be the CMOS battery has packed up and needs replacing. Meaning that your notebook is loosing it's initial CMOS settings and is refusing to start. Replace and reset / clear CMOS and see what it does.

Update: I tried to start the laptop without the CD-ROM and the HDD, and also with each in separately. No luck

5 yr old.. hrm.. mecer? need to take it to them and have the bios flashed. If its the one like my sister has, then it will always have issues. :( Every so often the bios gets bugged and the usb ports disappear. Thats kinda why, as nice as their prices for the new i3,5 proc notebooks.. i won't touch it.
