laptop screen issues

Ouch. Last time I saw something similar to your first pic was when I fried the graphics playing NFS Underground - the chip itself actually burnt and melted a bit :cry:
Except the lines were horizontal, white and a whole lot more than yours.
Can't I say I know what's wrong with yours though.

I suppose checking out the graphics chip couldn't hurt
 
Easiest way to tell is, when the screen is off, see if the smudging is still visible, if so then it's the lcd otherwise it's something else like the inverter or as charlie_82 said.
