Hi

I've been rolling the idea around in my head, I want to buy myself a laptop. But ive previously owned 2 laptops Dell/Fujitsu and both of them hurt my eyes tremendously.

On my desktop pc I am using the LG CRT Flatron.

I suspect the reason my eyes hurt so much from using laptop screens are the flicker, most laptops can only refresh the screen at 60Hertz 1024 x 768.

IIRC most 17" (Cathode Ray Tube) screen/monitors can refresh the screen at 80-120Hertz resolution 1024 x 768 (my Flatron managed 200Hertz).

Does anyone here currently aware of any lcd screens that I can buy which doesn't put as much strain on the eyes ? Perhaps something with a decent refresh rate of 75 and up. If it was found on a laptop/notebook it would also be great.

For curiosities sake, what screen/refresh rate can be found macbooks and what of the sony VAIO ?

I have some news for you that'll squash your theory about the flicker. LCD screens don't. As in, they don't flicker at all because that's not how the technology works. As for why they hurt your eyes? They're possibly too bright. I had the same happen to me when I first got a Samsung LCD screen and dropping the brightness a tad sorted it out nicely.

I do know that some of the Acer G series screens (not available in SA) have up to 75hz at their native resolution, the G24 I believe is one of them. And if I am not mistaken there is a samsung screen with up to 125hz. I also don't think it is available in SA either :(

oh thanks you guys. I feel a little silly right now..

But I did notice a laptop that could do 75Hertz, so why do they even have refresh rate.. I know they can't flicker like crt's but I heard that if you're in an office where the lights are fluorescent the lights are also refreshed at 60hertz. So after a while you'd get a headache since our brains would pick up on the synchronism in the pattern between the light and screen.

While I'm on the topic of laptop / lcd screens - can anyone answer me this: I heard that you can't play low resolution games very well on them. Is this true? I guess that they are referring to the likes of Command and Conquer 1(dos mode etc)

Regards ;D

Right, lights in the office have a slight flicker because you're running AC power into them and if you do a bit of reading on what exactly AC entails, I'm sure it'll become clear to you why you get a "flicker" in that aspect.
Laptop screens, as with everything inside the laptop, runs on DC, so you won't experience a flicker-effect due to the type of power being fed into it.
When they refer to refresh rate on LCDs, I sometimes feel that it's quite a marketing gimmick and generally people aren't quite sure what it refers to exactly. As far as I know, it's accepted as referring to the ability to redraw a pixel. Keep in mind that each individual pixel on a LCD display is on constantly, unlike with CRT, so there isn't any flicker, but I suspect you know that already.

As for screen res, LCDs don't like running in non-native resolutions so much. I can't say it's ever really bothered me, to be honest. The other day I played Death Rally on my laptop, and it looked just as crap as I remember it looking, so no worries there :p
I wouldn't worry too much about it on a laptop though, since I doubt you're going to run Crysis at max everything on it with lower res. If, however, for some you decided you wanted to, it'd be better to drop some detail and up the res to the LCD's native resolution.
