I'm trying to connect my (rather new) laptop to a (rather old) TV, but I can't seem to get the right cables. My laptop only has VGA (DE-15) / HDMI outputs and the TV only has RCA (composite) / S-Video inputs.

I read that this requires a scaler device, but those things seem quite pricy. Isn't there some way around this? (or at least a cheap alternative)

I've got VGA -> Component, and also VGA -> 9pin Mini-DIN cables if there's maybe an option via these...

I appreciate any suggestions.

bid or buy always have those little boxy type connector thingamabobs for very cheap.

I reckon the easiest & cheapest would be a VGA to RCA connector

Yes, it requires a scan converter to to drop the output frequency from 30 kHz+ down to 15.625 kHz as used by older TVs.

No. Buy a scan converter or a new TV. Some older laptops had video port resembling a s-video port that allowed this but few of the newer ones do as they probably assume most people have newer TVs by now that can handle vga/dvi/hdmi inputs.
