So I tried to connect to my Telkom Marconi router with my laptop's wireless. When I click on "view wireless networks", it just displays the message "no wireless networks were found in range". So I tried with my mom's new vista laptop, and I did connect to the router, and connect to the internet through the wireless connection.

So so far it looks like the settings on the router are correct, cause I did connect with another laptop. I run xp sp 3, and have tried anything I can think of, but nothing. My laptop just dont see the router. The wireless connection is enabled in my network connections.

Where can I start to locate the problem?

Oh, forgot to mention, I have a routesentry and rassppoe setup with 2 adsl accounts. Can the influence the wireless setup maybe?

Try control panel > Network Connections > right click on your wireless card and go to properties > click on TCP/IP and then click properties, make sure you set everything to "Automatic", if this doesnt work then maybe u'll have to configure TCP/IP settings manually.

Oh also, check on ur laptop if there is some sort of switch that enables the wireless. I know my laptop has a switch that either enables or disables the wireless.

All is automatic there. Just checked now.

It has one, but what I cant understand, is nothing seems to happen when I press it. There is a wireless light too, and not even that lights up. How can I check or repair or whatever that?

Yip, everything is up to date from what I can see. Tried windows to update, but according to widows there isn't a better match on the net. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it from the driver cd. I know it worked in the past, but I never really fiddled with it.

Hmmm, ok try configure the TCP/IP settings manually, put ur IP address, the subnet mask should come automatically and then enter the gateway. If that doesnt work, then I think your wireless card could be faulty. Are you sure your wireless is enabled?

It says enabled on the icon in Network connections. But it also has a red cross through. Is that what it must be? The ip address I must put in, is that the router's ip address?:o And where do I see what the "gateway" must be? Sorry, but I'm so a noob with this stuff...

go to start > run > type in cmd, once u get into command prompt, type ipconfig /all
then look for ur ip address and gateway. the gateway would be the routers ip address eg. 10.0.0.2 thats the default gateway. Your ip address would be something like 10.0.0.214. Ur subnet mask would be something like 255.255.255.0. Once u get all the info, go to ur wireless TCP/IP settings and enter them there.

If that still doesnt work, then there might be a problem with the wireless card. If thats the case right click on my computer > manage > and go to device manager. Look for your wireless network card and see if there is a yellow exclamation mark or a red cross.

Okay, done that all, still nothing. Also nothing at the device manager on that card. All looks fine, drivers everything. Can my routesentry and rassppoe setup maybe influence this?

Hmmm, im not exactly sure, I dont have much experience with routesentry, but either way, try not using routesentry or rassppoe, try disabling it or removing it completely and see if that has any affect

Okay, will try that. So basicly my setup is correct for connecting wireless to the router?(appart from routesentry and rassppoe which I must remove to check)

Well yeah, I dont see why it shouldnt work, other than the wireless card is faulty, but thats a last resort to troubleshooting...

Well I did uninstall routesentry and rassppoe, and nothing yet. So I think it might be the wireless card (built in). As stated earlier, The driver should be fine too.

How can I troubleshoot the wireless card, to make sure it is faulty. The laptop, Fujitsu Siemens Amilo L1310G, has a network switch, and a light, but nothing happens when you press the switch.

Any Ideas?

So I manage to get this resolved. I searched a lot on the net today and only now come across a similar problem on a notebook forum. Bottom line is, I must have a program called Power manager installed on my laptop for the wireless switch to work. The program came with the cd and I never installed it, cause I didn't think its necessary.
