Hi Guys

We are not that technical here.My sister got a laptop with her new cellc contract. They gave her a motorola c261 .THis has GPRS/WAp but no bluetooth.

Now she does not want to signup for edge and all but she wants to connect to
the net only in an emergency when she is away using her cellphone. How does she do this please.

For home she has ADSL

THanks
Didi

You can buy the Motorola Data Cable kit. Or if you have a digital camera, MP3player or anything that uses a mini USB cable then that cable will work to. just download a program called Multinet. http://multinet.diginext.com/files/one_exe/multinet_2.01.0014.exe using this link. it is a free program. install it and only plug the phone in once you have opened the software! then the APN for Vodacom, MTN & Cell C is internet. for Virgin mobile it is vdata.

Thanks for the reply.

2 questions please:-

1.How much is the cable ?
2. Will this connection now be the same as dialup / what speeds will I get please
will I be charged per minute etc..

Thanks in advance

Didi

Ok i am not sure of the current price of the cable but last time i checked it was R360.

You don't get charged for the time you are online you only get charged for the amount of data you send and receive. Which is R2 per MB. On Cell C. if your on contract you can add a data bundle.

R39 for 25MB
R100 for 100MB
R175 for 200MB
R350 for 500MB
R499 for 1 GB

Yes it will be Similar to dial-up for connecting and the speeds are 115kbps for GPRS or what we usually get is 70kbps or 10KB/s on average.

Thanks for that.

And will it be cheaper with virgin ?
Are pre-paid options available ?
Do you have to signup with CELL C or someone else

DD

No virgin mobile is the cheapest at the moment.

Vodacom, MTN, Cell C = R2 per meg (without bundles)

Virgin Mobile = 50 cents per meg (so no bundle needed) and for every R200 you spend on VM they give you R30 back.

VM's starter packs are R89 and you get R50 airtime on it.

Thanks for that.

Where can I get this please ? does vigin have a website for this in SA
What is WAP please ?

Go to any Musica to get the Virgin Mobile pre-paid Sim and any Cell Phone store for the cable. you might have do a bit of shopping around as some stores are cheaper then others with accessories.

VM: www.virginmobile.co.za

WAP well it is a form of internet on your phone, you get billed the same way as connecting on your PC. It is mainly used for getting information and content such as ringtones, pictures, video, etc.

OK , so WAP will not help us get email via the PC , will it ?

DD

No, you'll make a seprate connection with your phone to the internet, it has nothing to do with WAP.

Thanks again

What about coverage, I mean will I be able to connect whereever I can make a
cellphone call.

Also can you speak on the cellphone and also connect to the net at the same
time

Thanks
DD

Yes, you will be able to connect where ever you can make a call.

No, you can't call and surf the net at the same time. how ever if you do make or receive a call while your online it won't disconnect just no data will be sent or received. untill you hand up then eveything will automatically resume.

Thanks

Will I be able to use it if I have a cell c cellphone contract, or a cell c prepaid account

DD

Yes as long as you have GPRS activated on your account then you will be able to. Dial 140 off your phone to activate it.

On VC I know of guys using 2 simcards linked to the same number. The one simcard is used only for the data connection in the data card, and the other only for voice calls in the phone.

Thanks for all the help, I appreciate it.

Do I still need a internet service provider, or is that included in it.

Thanks
