To the clever guys here:

If I had between R 5 000 and (maximum) R 10 000 to spend on a laptop, which brand/model would you recommend?

Thanks :)

Dell maybe? Bought my girlfriend one this weekend from Game for R3999 (R4999 without internet)... its entry level, but seems pretty good.

Not an Acer - their batteries are really crap, and try find a replacement battery.

I know of three people who can't find damn batteries, and who's batteries lasted under a year on theirs.

I have been very with my HP bought in Dec 2005. Still running like a dream. Solid machine.

Problem with HP is, their support in SA lately is rather scarce. If I had up to R10k to splash, I'd go for something from Asus.
Something like the ASUS F5RL-AP002E
Comes with a 2 year global fetch and repair warranty, which is good since you do a fair amount of traveling.
I WOULD, however, upgrade the RAM. Not sure how much this machine can handle, but memory's cheap these days. 2GB should be fine for your needs, but I'd get a 2GB sodimm, if the laptop can handle up to 4GB of ram, and add that to the 1GB already in there. Should be plenty.
Unfortunately I don't have any other brands worth looking at, on my pricelist. Sony is good, but way out of your price range.

Sorry, for a moment there I confused Asus with Acer! That's the bad one, right?

Yeh - in my book Acer are bad... my laptop keys are even falling off :(

Yeah, I'd stay away from Acer. Asus make some solid laptops these days. Also look into Toshiba. They're not bad lately either.
But PERSONALLY, if it were my money, I'd pick up an Asus, especially with that warranty. Most brands have warranties valid only in one country, with the option of buying an international one at extortionate prices.

Phoned Acer?

95% of people tell me they have great support.

I find their support to be shocking.

When I bought the laptop, they give you this complete fold out guide on how to upgrade the ram, I phoned to find out what RAM they use so I could get the same, they told me that if I do it myself I void the warranty (even though they give you a guide in the box, not that its needed in my case), I then asked them how much for 1GB + installation, it was just over R2,000. Did it myself for R550.

They will not get another cent out of me.

ASUS F5SL-AS232E

That's also a really good machine. In Bloem you should get it at exactly R10k, if you work on a 10% markup and 14% VAT on that, which one local store does.
Not sure how prices are in jhb though.

I don't know if support covers selling upgrades at bargains. ;)

My mum's had an Acer for 4 years now (the same one)
Apart from the time I fried the graphics card, it's been 100%. Only complaint is the paint is wearing off the common keys

Never had an issue with Acer, just bought one for the GF.
Upgraded the ram myself to 4gb and confirmed that the warantee is not void. Suppliers who need to uphold the warantee will not supply me with extra ram and not inform me that i will void the warantee if installed by myself.

I have it in writing from Acer that the warranty will be void, just trying to find the damn email... or hellopeter complaint.

Bang for buck = Fujitsu Siemens (Also very good after sales service) Had mine for 2 years + and has been fantastic....Otherwise HP Laptops are really nice or take a look at Asus (NOT ACER NO NO NO)....;)
