Was going through a few pages on the Large Hallidon Collider.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider

Does anyone know what scientists have discovered so far?

Last test progress I can find here: http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/10/cerns-large-hadron-collider-started-are-we-still-here/
But that was 10th September 2008 and electrical problems caused halt on the 19th September 2008. There is mention of testings resuming in Spring 2009 (Must be our Mar/Apr 2009) here: http://www.lhc.ac.uk/latest-news.html

Is this the real countdown timer or did someone forget to switch it off ?: http://quegrande.org/countdown/

ALICE is the acronym for A Large Ion Collider Experiment,
* What happens to matter when it is heated to 100,000 times the temperature at the centre of the Sun ?
* Why do protons and neutrons weigh 100 times more than the quarks they are made of ?
* Can the quarks inside the protons and neutrons be freed ?

I don't think anything too bad would happen happen once the full cycle of testings have been completed or if anything will happen at all. Result or no result will certainly be great advancement for us in understanding who we are and where we come from.

ps. Just in case though lol

If you do not see the word "Nope" get worried.

Kasbah, i think the scientist have discovered that they shouldn't have gone for the cheapest soldering iron :p

Gosh those are some nice pics though, thanx, I bet the solderer responsible got his wire pulled.

lol at
Aside from wrecking 53 of the Large Hadron's magnets, the incident released six tons of helium into the atmosphere. There have been no reports of Geneva's residents all talking like Chipmunks on that fateful day, however.
That would have been history in the making and many records set.

I see at the bottom of the page mention to get the Large Hadron Collider back to colliding by June of next year. *patience and safety first I guess*

Next year June yup,

Although i'm betting everything on them doing the first "production" collision on December 21st 2012

:D

Hi, I was looking into the LHC machine and I think it's pretty cool. PS do you mean by Production collission??

I may be way off here but I think that "production collisions" is a term used for quarks that are produced due to the colliding of the hadrons, protons and neutrons. This in turn will allow an advancement in the experimental program currently in progress at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The aim of the heavy-ion program is to provide a window on a state of matter known as Quark-gluon plasma, which characterized the early stage of the life of the Universe.

they had to stop the programme because of a small problem.if they make any discoveries would they share this knowledge would the rest of mankind or do you think they will think mankind is not ready to digest it for its far reaching implicetions.

Mmm... hear we nead a friend of mine's wife to give input, she's quite involved with the whole thing...

It will be shared. The collaboration is world wide and the open grid computing system is setup in such a way that the data can be easily shared.

Mmm... hear we nead a friend of mine's wife to give input, she's quite involved with the whole thing...
Hmmm sorry.. I have been slow, I'll send he the link now and ask her to respond in the morning

An understatement. LOL. Prada handbags are "pretty cool". A 27km long accelerator that can accelerate a particle to almost the speed of light is something else.

Warm? :p

Seriously though, this is such an awesome experiment! I'd love to see it in opperation.

The world's biggest atom smasher will be put to the test once more in September after scientists have conducted tests and set up additional safety precautions to stop any further mistakes that halted the $10 billion machine after its startup in 2008, the operator announced on Saturday.

*bookmarks Has TLHC destroyed the world yet

That was the original plan, But its more than likely oct/november

Single beam looks likely to happen end of October, Double beam dependent on the first beam tests, and collisions by end November.

They normally shut down over december, but might run straight through this year to catch up. If all works out ok, I'm hopefully planning to join Claire at CERN mid-dec (holds thumbs)

FFS never trust scientists! :p:D

Nice hope you can go visit her and have a ball blowing up particles :D

I thought it meant that the Collider was in the business of producing collisions. And it would be back in the business of producing collisions by December 21st 2012. I had no idea that it actually meant something. My bad.
