Latencies to Mauritus

I have seen people on WAGE Teamspeak from Mauritius getting ~60ms ping, you should change your ISP

Yeah, seems SAFE is the only major link to you. You should get on the SEACOM love :D

Even so, looking at the physical cable routing and landing points may have little to do with packet routing at an IP layer.

Submarine cables are not run as fat multi-hop IP pipes, instead they're composed of multiple layer-2 (virtual) circuits who's start and end points may not align with the physical cable route or (in many cases) be limited to one cable system.

So even if an SA ISP uses SAFE, they may chose not to terminate their circuit at Mauritius (for commercial reasons). Thus from a layer-3 IP perspective Mauritius is not accessible on that route even though the layer-2 bits/frames pass through it.

Pretty much spot on.

If anything, it is up to the Mauritus ISP/s to buy capacity on the SAFE cable down to Cape Town, and then get additional layer2 added on top of that to CINX and NapAfrica CT1 and peer with the South African ISPs there to gain optimal latency to South Africa. They would want to do the same with SAFE to MTunzuni with extra layer2 to JINX and NapAfrica JB1 and even DINX and Napafrica DB1.

If they do that, that will give them some pretty amazing access to South African Akamai and Google Cache servers, and should give their users a much improved service on that too, looking at the distance.
 
Really? 60ms to South Africa? That would be awesome!!!! What's the ISP?

But I doubt the current ISP (Mauritius Telecom) will buy extra capacity because they already have Akamai servers and Google Cache servers
 
Some extra information, Mauritius sometimes sends data to Europe via SEACOM and EASSy. I get around 200ms to France

they say it is a great place but job wise what is there to do there?

when you look at the cost of 4MB with VOD it is cheaper than our standard 4MB without VOD
