This is a fairly dumb question to most, but I have never bothered to ask. Why is it possible to have a very bad (high) ping, yet a fast data transfer speed?

You can have a highway or single lane road but the distance from Pretoria to Cape Town is still great...
You can have a fibre connection at home but your connection to that overseas server on Battlefield still has to travel a great distance and over many hops (servers/switches/routers). And each hop adds to the latency that you will experience.
Now lets say for instance in both cases with the highway and single lane, is there anyway that one can lower the ping then? You can have a highway or single lane road but the distance from Pretoria to Cape Town is still great...
